Establishing Quick, Confident Connections
Day 4 of 10 of The Complete Medium Series
Over the past three days, I've shared foundational practices that support strong mediumship development. Today, I want to focus on a practical skill that transformed my professional work—establishing quick, confident connections with spirit.
The One-Minute Connection
Throughout my 30 years as a professional medium, one principle has guided my approach to connections:
"I always have the same approach, make it as simple as possible because there is nothing worse for a medium than drop the contact. At least for me, it haunts me forever. So if I have to drop the contact, I can count them on my 10 fingers over the years I've been working, how seldom I've done that because it's too devastating for me when that happens."
This has led me to develop a method for establishing clear contact within seconds to a minute—rather than the several minutes many developing mediums require.
Starting with Relationship
While some mediums begin with physical descriptions or specific evidence, I've found that starting with relationship creates the fastest, most confident connections:
"I always start with a relationship because if I say I have a lady here, everybody have a lady in the spirit world. If I say I have a mom here, I maybe exclude three parts of the audience. And it's easy to establish who I am with immediately or quicker, so to speak."
When you begin by stating the relationship—"I have your mother here" rather than "I have a woman here"—you immediately establish the context for everything that follows. This approach works equally well in private readings and platform demonstrations.
Traditional Approach"I have a lady here. She's showing me she's in her 70s or 80s. She's showing me something with her heart. She likes to bake..." This approach requires several pieces of information before the recipient can confirm who you're connecting with. | Relationship-First Approach"I have your grandmother here from your mother's side. She's showing me she had heart problems before she passed..." The recipient immediately knows who you're connecting with, allowing deeper evidence to follow. |
The Five-Evidence Rule
Another technique that has served me well is what I call the "five-evidence rule":
"Use maximum five pieces of evidence to establish contact. If they don't understand it in five pieces of evidence, you go back and sort them out."
This approach prevents the common problem of piling on more and more information when a connection isn't being recognized. Instead of adding confusion, I go back to what I've already shared and find where the misunderstanding might be.
This disciplined approach builds confidence—both yours and your client's—because it shows you're working methodically rather than "fishing" for connections.
Quick Connection Exercise
Try this approach in your next reading or practice session:
Start by clearly stating the relationship (mother, father, grandmother, etc.)
Add 2-3 specific details about their passing or personality
Check for confirmation before continuing
If confirmation isn't immediate, go back and clarify rather than adding more information
Once connection is established, then explore deeper evidence
This method creates quick, clear connections that build your confidence while serving your clients better.
Mediumship is Quick and Fast
When you establish connections quickly, something remarkable happens—you create an energy of confident mediumship that enhances everything that follows:
"Mediumship is quick and fast. So when you're standing up on a platform working and you can even stand in your room, don't close your eyes because you lower the energy immediately. When you close your eyes, you're actually sending a signal to the brain that you're going to sleep or relax. And that's not what we're gonna do. We're gonna be up here. We're gonna be alert. We're gonna have fun. We're gonna be in action."
This alert, energetic approach transforms both your experience and your recipients' experience—creating engaging, evidence-filled connections that leave everyone feeling uplifted.
Your Reflection Question
Think about your current approach to establishing connections: How long does it typically take you to confirm who you're connecting with? What might change if you adopted the relationship-first, five-evidence approach?
Tomorrow: I'll share my approach to medium storytelling—moving beyond basic evidence to create rich, meaningful narratives that capture the essence of those in spirit.
