Overcoming Self-Doubt & Insecurity

Day 8 of 10 of The Complete Medium Series

We've covered many practical techniques and approaches over the past week. Today, I want to address what might be the most significant challenge facing developing mediums: self-doubt and insecurity.

The Universal Mediumship Challenge

If you've ever questioned your abilities or wondered if you're "making it all up," you're not alone—even after 30 years as a professional medium, I still experience moments of doubt:

"I've been working for 30 years, and the other day I was thinking, 'My God, can I really do this?'"

Mia

This isn't a sign of failure or inadequacy—it's a natural part of mediumship development. In fact, I've observed that the most sensitive, compassionate mediums often struggle most with these feelings.

"I think everybody who has a calling within the heart has some kind of insecurity when it comes to the spirit world. We don't want to be delusional."

Mia

The Root Causes of Mediumship Insecurity

Understanding the sources of our insecurity helps us address them more effectively:

  1. Fear of delusion - "Maybe I'm faking it. Maybe I'm not a true medium. Maybe it's not the reality, you know? Maybe I'm just making it up."

  2. No external validation - Unlike most skills, there's no certificate or degree that "proves" your abilities

  3. Unpredictable results - Even experienced mediums have variations in their connections

  4. Self-criticism - "My huge weakness is the fear of not being good enough, still today."

Recognizing these patterns helps us develop specific strategies to overcome them.

A Personal Confession

"My biggest fear was that the audience would say afterwards, that was a shitty medium. That was my fear far beyond anything else. And the second one was that maybe I'm faking it. Maybe I'm not a true medium... When is the day I'm gonna wake up and realize I lived in an illusion?"

If you've ever had similar thoughts, you're walking the same path as countless professional mediums before you. These thoughts don't mean you're failing—they're simply part of the journey.

From Weakness to Strength

One of the most powerful shifts I've experienced is reframing what I once saw as weaknesses:

"That vulnerability is actually becoming your strength."

Mia

Your sensitivity, empathy, and even your self-doubt are not obstacles to overcome—they're the very qualities that make your mediumship meaningful and healing. When we embrace rather than fight against these qualities, something remarkable happens.

Practical Confidence Building

Beyond philosophical shifts, there are practical approaches that build genuine confidence:

"I work quite a lot with my own mind to not destroy the beauty of what I'm doing."

Mia

Confidence-Building Practices

  1. Reframe "mistakes" - "There are no nos. A no is just more learning because the mind is trying to interpret energy."

  2. Focus on what you learned - "Not what you missed. What did you learn from that situation?"

  3. Use positive self-talk - "I can do this. I know I get everything for a reason."

  4. Set clear intentions - "As soon as you put the intention there, the mind will work for you, not against you."

  5. Simplify your approach - "Make it as simple as possible... establish contact within a few seconds, a minute maximum."

  6. Embrace experimentation - "I'm just going to experiment. I'm going to have fun. See what happens this time."

These practical approaches build confidence through action rather than waiting to "feel" confident.

The Honesty Balance

While I advocate for embracing vulnerability in your development, I also recognize there's a time for projecting confidence even when you don't feel it:

"When you are the professional medium and taking clients, you have to fake it. Even if you feel insecure, you can't show that to the client because then they will not accept what you're saying to them."

Mia

This isn't about deception—it's about creating the conditions where your genuine abilities can shine. Just as a surgeon wouldn't tell a patient they're nervous before an operation (even if they are), there's a time to own your power without broadcasting your doubts.

Your Reflection Question

What specific doubts or insecurities have most affected your medium development? How might you reframe these as potential strengths rather than weaknesses?

Tomorrow: I'll share my insights on creating a sustainable mediumship practice—balancing service with self-care to prevent burnout and maintain your wellbeing.
