Creating a Sustainable Mediumship Practice

Day 9 of 10 of The Complete Medium Series

As we near the end of our 10-day journey, today I want to address a critical topic that's often overlooked in mediumship development—how to create a practice that's sustainable for years rather than months.

The Mediumship Health Crisis

After 30 years working with and observing professional mediums, I've noticed a concerning pattern:

"Have you ever seen a healthy medium?"

Mia

This question highlights an uncomfortable truth—many mediums struggle with burnout, health issues, and sustainability. I know this firsthand:

"It's very important to find that comfortability within it. And I know I got my diabetes because of stress and anxiety, not only because of the work, but family, of course, but mostly because of the work."

Mia

These challenges aren't inevitable—they result from specific patterns that we can identify and change.

The Time Boundary Challenge

One of the most common pitfalls for developing mediums is poor time management:

"How many of you when you start doing sitting was doing more than half an hour? You say half an hour and you're doing one and a half hour, you know. I've done that, know, because I want to be in service."

Mia

This pattern happens because, as sensitives, we feel the client's desire for more information. We want to help, to serve, to give—often at our own expense.

The Medium Vulnerability

"We are also open to a huge amount of emotional blackmail. There's a lot of you make a sitting for 30 minutes, you end up doing 45 minutes, an hour, an hour and a half and suddenly we're up in two hours. Because you feel the sitter wants more."

This vulnerability to others' needs is part of what makes you a good medium—but without boundaries, it can lead to burnout and resentment.

Setting Clear Boundaries

Creating a sustainable practice requires clear, consistent boundaries:

What Drains You

  • Sessions that run over time

  • Clients who demand specific spirits

  • Working in spaces that don't feel safe

  • Feeling obligated to "perform"

  • Not charging appropriately for your time

What Sustains You

  • Clear time boundaries (30-40 minutes)

  • Owning your process and approach

  • Creating a comfortable working environment

  • Focusing on connection rather than performance

  • Valuing your time and energy appropriately

Setting these boundaries isn't selfish—it's essential for providing quality service over time:

"When you're working as a medium, you're not allowed to give away your power... you are in charge of the sitting."

Mia

Energy Management vs. Time Management

Beyond managing your calendar, sustainable mediumship requires conscious energy management:

"When it's time to work, I just go in for it and forget the rest of the world, because this is my time."

Mia

This focused presence during work hours must be balanced with equally intentional recovery time. Many mediums make the mistake of always being "available" to spirit—creating chronic energy depletion.

Sustainable Practice Exercise

Take a few minutes to reflect on your current mediumship practice and consider:

  1. Time boundaries - Set a clear session length (30-40 minutes recommended) and stick to it

  2. Space boundaries - Create a dedicated physical space for readings that feels energetically safe

  3. Client boundaries - Develop clear policies about what you will and won't do in readings

  4. Energy management - Schedule proper breaks between readings and full days off for recovery

  5. Personal practice - Regular sitting in the power to build your foundation

This structured approach creates the conditions for sustainable, joyful mediumship.

Moving Beyond Perpetual Student Status

Another aspect of sustainability is knowing when to stop taking courses and start practicing professionally:

"It's nice to go to a course. You practice in security and you learn and you can experiment with it. But in all honesty, you're not supposed to go courses all your life."

Mia

While ongoing learning is valuable, there comes a point where courses become a comfort zone rather than a growth edge. True development comes through practical application—working with real clients in real-world situations.

"You're supposed to get out there and work, work for the people, you know, and be an asset and an ambassador for the spirit world."

Mia

Your Reflection Question

Which aspects of your current practice feel unsustainable? What specific boundaries might help you serve from a place of energy and joy rather than depletion?

Tomorrow: In our final email, I'll share how all these elements integrate to create your complete medium development path—and how you can continue your journey.
